Born in Kure, Hiroshima Prefecture, in 1956. Mori is a filmmaker and writer renowned for the award-winning A (1998) and A2 (2001), documentaries on Aum Shinrikyo and the aftermath of the 1995 Tokyo subway sarin gas attacks that screened at numerous international film festivals, including the Berlin International Film Festival. His 2011 film 311 is a collaborative documentary about the aftermath of the 2011 Tohoku earthquake. In 2016 he released FAKE (JC 2016) about the composer Mamoru Samuragochi who was publicly outed as a fraud. Winner of the Kodansha prize for non-fiction, Mori has published over 30 bestselling books on social issues and the media.
