HONEYMOON
In a playful critique of Japanisme, the craze for Japanese art and design in Europe in the mid-1800s often rife with misunderstanding and projection, HONEYMOON recasts the wedding scene of the opera and film Madame Butterfly. Joining Cio-Cio San (Qinhua Yang) is the photographer Adolf de Meyer (Taro Nettleton) and anthropologist Frederick Starr (Jack Mclean), kneeling seiza-style as broadcast commentators describe the action now set on the lunar base Nagasaki.
Streaming in the U.S. from August 20-September 2 as part of JAPAN CUTS: Festival of New Japanese Film 2021
